For those whose response to COVID-19 includes exploring beyond vaccines, conventional pharmaceuticals, and the watchful or healthy waiting until such tools might arrive, interest in cannabinoids has been high – and controversial.
Published in Frontiers in Pharmacology the researchers said that lung complications can cause a cytokine storm – which has been seen in many COVID patients. When the body is under attack the immune system releases cytokines. The body then reacts to the site of infection, but for people with Covid-19, the cytokines can become inflamed.

The researchers, Olga and Igor Kovalchuck have reportedly been developing and testing a novel cannabis strain for years, except with the goal of creating a strain that helps to combat cancer and inflammation. When the pandemic hit, the duo refocused their efforts on how the strain might be used to help fight COVID-19.
Forbes is reporting, “two Canadian researchers think that a special strain of cannabis might potentially be a valuable tool in the fight against COVID-19.” (Source: April issue of the online medical journal Preprints)

Terpenes, another class of healing compounds in the cannabis plant, are also looking to be effective against Covid-19 by modulating cytokine storms, as well as blocking proteins that allow the virus to replicate.
